Background of the Study

Water is an essential natural resource for human consumption, agriculture, and industrial processes. However, rapid industrialization has led to increased pollution of water bodies, posing serious environmental and public health risks (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). Industrial pollution introduces heavy metals, chemical effluents, and other toxic substances into water systems, leading to contamination that affects aquatic life and human health (United Nations Environment Programme [UNEP], 2023).

Gombe State, located in northeastern Nigeria, has experienced rapid industrial growth, particularly in manufacturing, textile production, and cement processing. These industries generate large volumes of wastewater containing pollutants such as lead, cadmium, arsenic, and other harmful chemicals (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024). Without proper waste treatment facilities, many industrial effluents are discharged directly into rivers, streams, and groundwater sources, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases and environmental degradation (National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency [NESREA], 2023).

The adverse effects of industrial pollution on water quality in Gombe State are evident in the declining availability of safe drinking water, increased cases of waterborne diseases, and the loss of biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems (Nigerian Bureau of Statistics [NBS], 2024). Despite existing environmental policies, enforcement remains weak, leading to continued pollution. This study aims to evaluate the extent of industrial pollution in Gombe State and its impact on water quality, providing empirical data to support policy interventions and sustainable industrial practices.

Statement of the Problem

Industrial pollution has become a significant environmental challenge in Gombe State, with many water bodies showing signs of contamination from untreated industrial effluents. The increasing demand for industrialization has led to weak enforcement of environmental regulations, allowing factories to discharge harmful chemicals into the environment (UNEP, 2023). This has resulted in widespread water pollution, threatening both public health and agricultural productivity.

Residents in Gombe State, particularly those relying on surface and groundwater for drinking and domestic use, face increased risks of waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid (WHO, 2024). The contamination of water sources also affects livestock and irrigation, impacting food security in the region. Despite these threats, limited research has been conducted to assess the magnitude of industrial pollution and its direct impact on water quality in Gombe State. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating industrial pollution levels and their consequences on water resources.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of industrial pollution in water sources across Gombe State.
  2. To examine the impact of industrial pollution on water quality and human health.
  3. To evaluate the effectiveness of existing policies in regulating industrial pollution in Gombe State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the major industrial pollutants affecting water quality in Gombe State?
  2. How does industrial pollution impact water quality and public health?
  3. How effective are environmental regulations in controlling industrial pollution in Gombe State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Industrial pollution significantly deteriorates water quality in Gombe State.
  2. There is a strong correlation between industrial pollution and the prevalence of waterborne diseases.
  3. Weak enforcement of environmental regulations contributes to increased industrial pollution.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on major industrial areas in Gombe State, assessing water pollution levels and their impact on communities. Limitations may include restricted access to industrial sites and the availability of long-term water quality data.

Definitions of Terms

  • Industrial Pollution: The contamination of the environment due to waste and emissions from factories, industries, and manufacturing plants (UNEP, 2023).
  • Water Quality: The chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of water, determining its suitability for human consumption and ecosystem sustainability (WHO, 2024).
  • Heavy Metals: Toxic elements such as lead, mercury, and arsenic, which accumulate in water sources and pose health risks (Adebayo & Yusuf, 2024).
